Carmichael: SNP in Shetland avoiding independence “like the plague”

Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael has today accused the SNP of "desperately" trying to distance themselves from their top priority - independence - and avoiding the word "like the plague" while campaigning in the Shetland by-election.

Alistair Carmichael commented:

"The SNP campaign in Shetland are trying desperately to detach themselves from the divisive nationalist ideology that underpins everything they do.

"They're avoiding the word independence like the plague. It's not on their leaflets, it's not in their videos, it's not what they're advertising to the islanders they meet. But everyone knows they will always put independence before every other issue, no matter how important it is to Shetland.

"The SNP are legislating on independence in Holyrood as we speak. Shetland's new MSP will be forced to vote on this issue extremely soon. When it comes to it a nationalist MSP will vote as their independence overlords command without a second thought for Shetlanders' opposition to splitting off from our neighbours."
