Commenting on this year's SQA results which show a 2% drop at Higher level and a 1.1% drop at Advanced Higher, Scottish Liberal Democrat children and young people spokesperson Carole Ford said:

"Congratulations to everyone receiving their results today. Through hard work and commitment, teachers and pupils have achieved many excellent results, in particular, an increase in the number of skills-based qualifications, a step in the right direction.

"However, the decline in overall attainment standards has continued. Since 2016, attainment standards have fallen steadily at every level, from National 4 to Advanced Higher, including Skills for Work and the Scottish Baccalaureate. Particularly worrying are the falling levels of attainment in the critical STEM subject areas.

"It is time for the Scottish government to listen to the professionals and take action to reverse this ongoing decline."
