Scottish Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson Mike Rumbles has today attacked the Scottish Government's management of the AWPR contract, after a Scottish Parliament committee was told that the project could now cost up to £1 billion.

At this morning's Rural Affairs and Connectivity committee, Stephen Tarr of Balfour Beatty said that the AWPR project could now cost up to £1 billion. It was also confirmed that if additional claims are not settled by Transport Scotland, contractors may seek to launch a legal challenge if no agreement is reached.

Speaking after the committee, Mr Rumbles said:

"The Scottish Government's so called 'fixed price contract' of £745 million may not turn out to be that. Contractors confirmed this morning that the cost of the road could be up to £1 billion.

"The Transport Secretary was unable to confirm to the committee today the level of claims for more taxpayers money lodged with them by the contractors and unable to tell MSPs when the final cost will be known!

"When is a fixed price contract not a fixed price contract? When it is signed by the Scottish government."
