Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has called on the Mental Health Minister to look into the "culture of care" at Carseview as a matter of urgency following revelations about the mistreatment of its mental health patients in a BBC documentary last night.

Former patients claimed restraint practices were being used violently and repeatedly and illegal drugs were available on wards.

Alex Cole-Hamilton said:

"It's truly horrifying to hear that vulnerable patients have been treated in a violent or aggressive manner at the Carseview Centre.

"People being treated for mental ill health need support and empathy. No one should feel unsafe in their time of need.

"Scotland's mental health services as a whole are under extreme funding and staffing pressures but this can't be allowed to fall through the cracks. The new Mental Health Minister must look into these claims as a matter of urgency. The culture of care at Carseview must change."
