Scottish Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson Mike Rumbles has welcomed figures released today showing a further decline in almost all areas of road traffic accidents in Scotland and called for even more ambition from the Scottish Government.

Commenting on the Transport Scotland report, Mr Rumbles said:

"The number of serious and fatal accidents on our roads has steadily declined over the past two decades but there is still more we can do to keep our children, pedestrians and motorists safe.

"The Scottish Government has set a target to reduce the number of casualties by 40% by 2020 and the number of children being harmed by 65%. The natural trend in road safety means that those figures weren't ambitious enough and have already been overtaken.

"It is not good enough to sit back and rest on our laurels. I want to see the Scottish Government and Transport Scotland come up with even greater ambition to push the casualty figures down even further."
