Speaking after today's Scottish Affairs committee took evidence on immigration, Liberal Democrat Scotland spokesperson Christine Jardine MP said:

"The evidence we heard at today's committee is of great concern. Scotland is globally renowned for its universities but academics are clearly warning that Brexit poses a huge threat, not just to universities but to the industries that rely on a highly educated workforce to thrive.

"Academic staff, support staff and student numbers could all fall causing significant problems. Already the Chair of the Russell Group, Professor Anton Muscatelli is warning that senior professors are giving Brexit Britain the cold shoulder.

"Liberal Democrats recognise the enormous contribution that EU academics and students make to our universities and will continue to fight for the rights of EU citizens to live and work here."
