East Dunbartonshire Council must do better on recycling

After a visit to Viridor recycling plant in Glasgow, Jo Swinson MP has called on East Dunbartonshire Council to expand its recycling services.

Viridor handles all of North and South Lanarkshire's recycling, working with more than 80 local authorities and thousands of private customers. Jo was given a tour of the plant by UK Chairman Colin Drummond, Scottish Regional Director Colin Paterson and Communications Manager Martin Grey.

Commenting, Jo Swinson said:

"I was very pleased to be invited to take a look around the Viridor plant. It is encouraging to see that such a wide range of plastics can be recycled, and I know many people in East Dunbartonshire would be very glad if the Council would increase the range of items which they will collect for recycling. There are plenty of people in living in flats or in rural areas who have no doorstep recycling services at all, which is something East Dunbartonshire Council really must address. With such top class recycling facilities on our doorstep there is no reason why we shouldn't be aiming to expand local recycling services as much as possible."

Communications Manager Martin Grey said:

"Scotland is undergoing a green revolution and Viridor is at its core. As Scotland's leading recycling, energy recovery and waste management company we're proud to already support East Dunbartonshire communities to recycle a range of items including glass and cans, fridges, televisions, and the full range of electrical items.

"But with ambitious Scottish and European zero waste targets we need to go further. That's why Viridor has invested in Scotland's most advanced materials recycling facility - part of the 'next generation' infrastructure we need. Jo is one of the UK's leading advocates of waste reduction and the role smarter waste management can play in moving towards sustainability. We were delighted to welcome her to the site and, with the Council, we look forward to further supporting businesses, public services, communities and residents in her constituency."
