MP Charles Kennedy has welcomed the news that the post office in Avoch will re-open next week, with a temporary arrangement to provide post office services in the village on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 9am until 1pm.
Mr Kennedy had pushed Post Office Ltd to provide a temporary service, after the branch in Avoch was forced to close in March - leaving local people unable to access pension and benefit payments, as well as a range of other services, without travelling to the next nearest branch in Fortrose.Charles Kennedy MP
Commenting, Mr Kennedy said:
"I am very pleased that Post Office Ltd has now succeeded in putting a temporary arrangement in place so that customers in Avoch have reasonable access to post office services again.
"The lapse in service has caused widespread concern in Avoch, where the post office is a valued part of the community. It is especially important following last year's round of branch closures that the Government and Post Office management show the level of commitment that was promised to keeping all remaining branches open.
"I hope the welcome return of post office services to the village will be accompanied by prompt moves towards re-establishing a permanent full-time service. The situation in Applecross - where the unforeseen ending of a temporary service has forced a second period of closure in the midst of the tourist season - is a reminder that it is still important to get long term, stable arrangements in place as soon as possible."
