Commenting on the news major supermarkets have all but met the target of reducing plastic bag use by half, Liberal Democrat MSP for Edinburgh South Mike Pringle said:
"Any reduction in plastic bag use is welcome, but the Scottish Government must now go further.
"Scotland should follow the example set by Ireland and aim to reduce plastic bag use by 95 per cent. The 50% target is only half way to making any real impact.
"Introducing a levy on plastic bags would help continue the progress made in changing the public's attitude towards the use of plastic bags that continue to harm the environment. I will continue to push the Scottish Government on this issue."
